Flomax

Originally developed to treat high blood pressure, the alpha blockers that make up Flomax were geared specifically as a treatment for men with prostate problems. Flomax is a product of Yamanouchi Pharmaceuticals and is marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim.

There are a growing number of men who suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. This condition is common in older men and the first signs of BPH are an enlarged prostate and difficulty in urinating. Flomax relaxes the muscles around the prostate gland and makes it easier for the man to urinate.

Many patients began to experience serious side effects after using Flomax. The drop in blood pressure caused many people to become dizzy and even fainted. A rare but serious condition that some men experienced was painful erections that were unrelated to a sexual experience that lasted more than four hours, which could ultimately result in permanent impotence.

A study conducted in Canada showed that men who were undergoing cataract surgery while taking Flomax suffered some serious complications that included the loss of an eye lens, retinal detachments and inflammation of the eye.

Flomax has also been responsible for causing impaired thinking and reactions and patients have been warned to not drive or engage in any activity that requires you to be alert such as driving. Anyone who is allergic to sulfa drugs will have the same reactions while using Flomax: hives, rashes, severe itching and breathing difficulties.

By 1995 the FDA sent warning letters to Urologists, Ophthalmologists and all healthcare professionals regarding the effects that Flomax could have on their patients. A second warning was issued recently by the Food and Drug Administration advising doctors to adjust their procedures accordingly while operating on patients who were taking the medication Flomax.

Flomax is still being administered for use in men with enlarged prostates. There have been some interactions with regards to certain foods so consult your doctor if you have been prescribed this drug.
