It was reported on May 1st 2009, that the popular diet product Hydroxycut, manufactured by Iovate Health Sciences Inc., has been linked to cause liver damage. The findings come from an immediate recall of the product by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has received a total of 23 complaints from users that have seen these adverse reactions from taking Hydroxycut. A 19-year-old man in 2007 was killed from taking the product as a regular supplement. Other adverse effects from taking Hydroxycut include, "liver failure, jaundice, seizures and cardiovascular problems." Iovate Health Sciences Inc. manufactures 14 different types and varieties of the drug, which is used to help increase fat burning, as well as increasing energy levels. The manufacturer has voluntary recalled 14 of its products that has approximately sold upwards of 9 million units last year alone. The FDA has yet to determine which ingredient is the one that is causing all of this damage because the combination of ingredients in the product is very complex further investigation is needed. Any diet product that was sold before October of 2004 was not required to be subject for review by the FDA. Therefore, "The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 required manufacturers to ensure a supplement to be safe before marketing. But manufacturers still don't need to register a product with the FDA or get approval before selling a supplement." Today if any product that is being sold on the market poses a health threat, it must be reported to the FDA within 15 days of notifying the manufacturer.
