Seroquel

Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic that is used alone to treat schizophrenia and with lithium or divalproex to treat bipolar disorder. Symptoms of schizophrenia include thinking you hear voices in your head, hallucinations, a sense that things are not really there and a suspicious mind. Bipolar disorder causes intense mood swings.

Seroquel is manufactured by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1997. The side effects of Seroquel include weight gain, dizziness, restlessness, constipation and fatigue.

In the past, antipsychotic drugs have been known to cause Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) and Tardive Dyskinesia. NMS involves the central nervous system and is a life threatening disease. It can also involve your kidneys and should be considered a medical emergency. The other disorder, Tardive Dyskinesia affects the muscles and movement of the body resulting in involuntary jerking motions of the arms and legs and twitching in the face.

At one point in 2002, there were reports of confusion between prescriptions for Seroquel and Serzone. The strength of the drugs and the fact that they were both available in tablet form added to the confusion. The two drugs were even stocked close together and accidental disbursements began to increase.

By 2003, patients that had been using six atypical antipsychotics, Seroquel included, had three times more chances of developing diabetes than those who took older antipsychotic medications.

In April of 2005, the FDA found that older patients that had been treated for dementia with medications such as Seroquel had a higher risk of death than those who did not take the medication. The FDA had not approved Seroquel to be used for this purpose and asked the company to include this revised warning on their labels.

You should not use Seroquel if you are at risk for diabetes or have been prescribed its use to treat dementia. If you suffer from any of the side effects of NMS or Tardive Dyskinesia, contact your doctor immediately.

Other side effects of Seroquel include: low blood pressure, increased heart beat, elevated cholesterol, liver problems, cataracts and seizures. If you are at risk because you already have heart problems, elevated cholesterol or issues with your liver, make sure that you are monitored by your physician on a regular basis. It does not take long for these conditions to escalate, especially when they are being treated by drugs like Seroquel.

If you, someone in your family or anyone you know have used the atypical antipsychotic Seroquel and suffered any signs of diabetes, NMS or Tardive Dyskinesia,  please contact the attorneys here at Napoli Bern Ripka Law Firm.
