Woman Struck and Killed by a Forklift in Brooklyn
The New York Police Department is investigating how a forklift struck and killed a woman on a Brooklyn street.
The accident happened about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday morning as Rosemary Pratt, 46, of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, crossed the intersection of East 14 Street and Avenue M in Midwood.
A 40-year-old unidentified construction worker operating the forklift was removing the machine from storage and heading to a nearby construction site to repair a New York City Transit overpass, when he struck Pratt with a part jutting off the back of the forklift.
An ambulance transported Pratt to Kings County Hospital where they pronounced her dead on arrival.
The forklift operator stayed at the scene. Police discovered equipment violations and issued the operator several summonses.
Construction accidents are not always the fault of the person who is operating the machinery, often they can be attributed to the carelessness of managers or other people who are running the job site. Construction companies must follow strict jobsite safety regulations, including rules governing heavy equipment operation, to ensure the safety of workers and the public.
