Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH), also called Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH), is a disease in which the tiny pulmonary arteries in the lungs become narrow or destroyed, raising the blood pressure within the lungs. This forces the heart to work harder to pump blood through the lungs, causing enlargement of the heart, a weakening of the heart muscle and eventually heart failure. The first sign of PPH is usually a shortness of breath or feeling light-headed during activity and may include a fast heart rate. Other symptoms include leg and ankle swelling, lips or skin turning a bluish color, pain or pressure in the chest, dizziness, fainting, fatigue and weakness.
There is no known cure for PPH. It is a progressive disease, which becomes worse with time. Treatment consists of medications to reduce the symptoms. Some people with this disease will require oxygen or a lung or lung and heart transplant.
