Accutane Side Effects Lawsuits

Hundreds of people across the country have filed Accutane side effects lawsuits claiming this drug caused their Inflammatory Bowel Disease Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis and that Hoffmann La Roche Inc. failed to warn patients adequately of the risks. In the news lately have been several lawsuit jury awards in the millions of dollars, illustrating that these juries recognized accountability of the pharmaceutical company for these Accutane side effects.

What is Accutane?

Accutane (isotretinoin) is a prescription medication manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Hoffman La Roche Inc. for the treatment of severe acne. According to Roche USA, over 13 million people have used this drug since the company introduced it in 1982. In 2002, the patent expired and the generic equivalents Amnesteem, Claravix and Sotret became available.

Accutane Side Effects

If you have taken Accutane and your doctor diagnosed you with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis, or you suffer symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, frequent bowel movements, diarrhea that may include blood, weight loss, skin ulcers, inflammation of the eye or joints such as arthritis, malnutrition or clubbing of the fingers, these are Accutane side effects.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) can include two variations, Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis, and is an inflammation that can affect anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract. The first documented cases of Inflammatory Bowel Disease associated with Accutane were in 1997. Since then, numerous studies have shown these forms of IBD are Accutane side effects. However, Accutane manufacturer Hoffman La Roche Inc. did not update the drug label to warn patients of these risks until 2005.

In June 2009, Hoffmann La Roche Inc. discontinued Accutane, but did not issue an Accutane recall. The company cited market domination by generic equivalents and high costs of defending themselves against Accutane side effects lawsuits as the reason. Therefore, although Accutane is no longer available, the generic equivalents Amnesteem, Claravix and Sotret are still on the market today.
