An alleged DUI driver hit and killed a New Jersey Department of Transportation worker as he assisted a stranded motorist in Camden County on Monday.

Joseph Kealey, 45, an Emergency Service Patrol Operator, parked on the shoulder of southbound I-76 near the I-295 interchange to assist a minivan with a flat tire when a Dodge Magnum driven by Alyson Amour hit Kealey and slammed into the back of his DOT service truck.

An ambulance rushed Kealey to Cooper University Hospital, where he later died.

Police charged Amour, 28, or Berlin, with driving under the influence.

Kealey, of Lindenwood, leaves behind a loving family including a wife and two daughters. He worked as a DOT emergency repair mechanic for about 3-and-half years.

Outgoing New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine asked for a moment of silence for Kealey and his family during his final State of the State address on Tuesday. "Our heart goes out to Joe’s family and the families of all public servants who have given their lives protecting the public," Corzine said.

Funeral services for Joseph Kealey are scheduled for Friday in care of the Danks-Hinski Funeral Home, 125 N. White Horse Pike at South Ave., in Lindenwold. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Berlin. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Animal Welfare Assoc., 509 Centennial Blvd., Voorhees, NJ 08043.
