Deadline Draws Near
You have probably been informed by now that the deadline to opt in to the World Trade Center settlement is November 8, 2010. This is true – but BEWARE. This deadline is nothing like the yearly April 15 deadline to file your federal tax return where you may postmark your tax return on April 15. Here, if you do not give your attorneys ample time to receive, scan, upload, process, and forward your settlement paperwork to the Court-appointed administrator, you will miss the opt-in deadline and be INELIGIBLE for compensation under the settlement and possibly prevent your eligibility for compensation under the Zadroga Bill should it pass. And, on top of the processing, you must allow your attorneys ample time to review your paperwork to ensure it is not deficient in any way. If there are significant errors, you will have not met the deadline and this may necessitate sending another package out to you to re-sign and return.
To avoid these pitfalls, send in your settlement paperwork immediately.
