Guidant Defibrillators

Guidant Defibrillators are implanted into the body to regulate heart rate and other functions of the heart in those who are suffering from heart disease. They are ultimately small computer devices that are implanted into the body to monitor the heart. These devices are implanted into the body due to a person's heart's inability to pump blood to the rest of the body. The use of a defibrillator will essentially regulate the heartbeat and essentially jump-start the heart if any regularity occurs.

In 2006, Guidant Defibrillators were recalled as malfunctioning where arising and people were in danger if implanted with one of Guidant's defibrillators. There was another Guidant recall that was issued in 2007 for approximately 73,000 of their defibrillators. Apparently the batteries in the devices were supposed to last for two years yet they were falling quite short of this estimate. Essentially 19 different models were recalled at this time yet there were no instances of any death related effects yet Guidant wanted to make sure that no unnecessary injuries were caused.

If a defibrillator is defective, it can cause extreme effects on the user. Heart disease is a very serious disease as it kills around 300,000 people per year. These patients rely on a defibrillator to keep their heart rate going and if a malfunction occurs the death rate is rather large.
