Attention Parents: Another Massive Recall of Cribs

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced another massive recall of cribs today of which parents and childcare providers should be aware.

Dorel Asia SRL, of Barbados, in cooperation with the CPSC is recalling about 635,000 drop side and non-drop side cribs because they pose suffocation and strangulation hazards to infants and toddlers. The drop side hardware can fail and cause the drop side to detach from the crib, creating a space in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. The recall also warns that if crib slats become damaged in storage, assembly, disassembly, or during shipping and handling, they may pose a serious entrapment and strangulation hazard.

The CPSC and Dorel Asia have received 31 reports involving failure of the drop side hardware, in six instances children were entrapped between the drop side and the mattress, three instances resulted in bruising to the child, one instance resulted in death of the child. They have received 36 reports of slat breakage, seven instances resulted in bruises and scratches to the child and two instances resulted in entrapment of the child.

In one tragic incident in October 2008, the six-month-old child of Landon and Lisa Taylor, of Cedar Rapids, IA, died after becoming entrapped and strangled in a Dorel Asia crib that the parents attempted to fix themselves after the drop side hardware broke. A statement by Dorel Asia issued to clarify the crib recall is quick to point out that police arrested Landon and Lisa Taylor for "child endangerment and death", but fails to state that prosecutors dropped all charges.

"The recalled cribs meet and exceed all applicable safety standards. Hundreds of thousands of Dorel Asia cribs have been properly assembled and used safely without incident. At Dorel Asia there is nothing more important than a baby's health and safety. It is our goal to provide parents with the safest sleep environment for their baby," said Dorel Asia in the statement.

To find out if your crib is affected by the Dorel Asia recall, visit the CPSC at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml10/10114.html

The recalled cribs were sold at K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart stores nationwide from January 2005 through December 2009 for between $120 and $700. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs, find an alternative safe sleeping environment for your child, and contact Dorel Asia at www.dorel-asia.com or (866) 762-2304 to receive a free replacement kit.

Parents and childcare providers should verify that the crib they are using is not affected by any U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall. Please review the crib recalls from 2007 to today below.
