Paxil Lawsuits

Paxil is a controversial medication that hit the U.S. marketing 1992. It was manufactured by SmithKline Beecham and quickly became the drug of choice for people suffering from several emotional disorders including depression, panic disorder, social phobia and obsessive compulsive disorder. The effects of the drug are usually evident from one to four weeks.

The drug itself is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or SSRI. Other drugs in the same category include Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil. The drugs work to increase the serotonin levels in the brain which in turn elevates a persons moods and improves their overall disposition. Many people who are clinically depressed have lower serotonin levels.

The problem has developed as to how to ever stop the treatment that is being used to resolve depression. It was never determined how long a patient should be on the medication and what do you do to replace it? The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry reported that up to 70 percent of general practitioners and 30 percent of the psychiatrists didn't know about the side effects of ending the use of drugs such as Paxil. Only a small percentage warned their patients about slowly lowering the dosage so that they could come off of these medications.

It has been said that the SmithKline Beecham Company knew since 1990 that Paxil could produce suicidal and homicidal tendencies. They failed to provide doctors and other professionals in the health field about these warnings and as a result a number of lawsuits have been filed against the company for its negligence.

In one case, a jury awarded relatives of a patient who had taken Paxil and had committees suicide as well as killed three other people $8 million. The company has never established the safety or effectiveness of Paxil for children under 18. In more recent years it has been determined that drugs like Paxil increased the rate of suicide in teenagers.
